Sarah Berger, CPCU, AIC
Divisional Assistant Vice President

Sarah Berger is responsible for Captive New Business Development and Marketing for the Alternative Markets Division of Great American Insurance Group, headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio. Also responsible for collateral management and contract administration, Ms. Berger was named to the position in 2004 after five years of claim experience with the Division.

Ms. Berger earned a BA from Mt. Union College, Alliance, Ohio with a double major in Business Administration and Spanish. She received a Masters (with honors) in Management from the Williams College of Business, Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio. Ms. Berger is a member of the Cincinnati chapter of the CPCU Society and has earned both an AIC and CPCU professional designation. She is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, was named as a YWCA Rising Star in 2006 and was a graduating member of the inaugural 2007 YWCA Board Leadership program.

Blaine leads all facets of our SMG captive business. He joined Discover Re in January 2008 from Genesis Underwriting Management Company, a subsidiary of General Re, where he was the national practice leader for the Captive and Reinsurance Division. As an active participant in the captive arena since the early 1990s, he has been involved with the formation of, and risk transfer for, captive insurance companies in a wide variety of industry segments. Spending much of his early career with the Royal Insurance Group, Blaine held posts as Vice President of Marketing as well as Vice President of Product Marketing/ Operational systems. He holds a B.A. degree in Political Science from Baldwin-Wallace College in Ohio and an M.B.A. from Pace University in New York.

Gary Bowers, Tax Partner, Johnson Lambert & Co.

Gary Bowers is a Tax Partner in Johnson Lambert & Co.'s Raleigh, North Carolina office. He has overall responsibility for the firm's tax services.

Gary has extensive experience in corporate tax planning, corporate reorganizations, and negotiations with IRS Officials within the financial services sector. He proactively works with clients to understand their business, mission and goals in developing tax-planning strategies. Gary is experienced in the development of business solutions for corporate clients resulting in significant federal, state and local tax savings.

Before joining Johnson Lambert & Co. in 2001, Gary directed the Carolinas/Florida area financial services tax practice at Ernst & Young, LLP. He was a senior tax executive with experience in developing complex business solutions for corporate tax clients. Gary began his career at KPMG, LLP, in Atlanta, GA. After earning his B.B.A. degree at the University of Georgia, Gary attended Georgia State University where he earned the equivalent of a Masters in Taxation.

Jerry Czekalski, ARM
Divisional Senior Vice President

Jerry has over thirty-five years industry experience. He has served in various capacities including casualty and umbrella underwriter, underwriting manager, operations manager, marketing manager, field office executive, and home office agency captive vice president. His current role is very broad in scope with duties crossing over various profit centers. He is the Chief Marketing Officer for the Alternative Markets Division accountable for new business development. This role coordinates the overall prospect due diligence process including underwriting, actuary, financial, claims, and loss prevention. In addition to his marketing responsibilities, Jerry is responsible for managing the growth and development of the Group and Single Entity Captive programs. Jerry received his B.S. in Management Science from the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Kevin M. Doherty

Kevin practices with the firm's Insurance Group. His experience concentrates on insurance regulatory law, with particular emphasis on captives, risk retention groups, self-insurance funds, and other alternative insurance vehicles. Kevin also practice entertainment law and represents recording artists, publishers, songwriters, and music-related companies in connection with all types of music industry agreements and transactions. Kevin is admitted to practice in Tennessee (1999), Georgia (1990) and New York (1986). He is a member of the Tennessee Bar Association, the Nashville Bar Association and the State Bar of Georgia.

Kevin is listed in Best Lawyers in America and has been recognized numerous times as one of the Nashville Business Journal 's "Best of the Bar", both for his work in Insurance Regulation. He also serves as Chair of the Middle Tennessee Better Business Bureau. Kevin also was recently listed again in the "In Charge" edition of Music Row magazine as a "Decision Maker" in the music industry..

Gregory Duca, J.D.

Greg is the National Liability Practice Lead for Sedgwick Claims Management Services, Inc. (Sedgwick CMS).  As the leader of our national liability practice Greg will work with Sedgwick CMS clients and colleagues across North America in the areas of program design, claims resolution policy, service standards and regulatory compliance.  He will also be involved in representing the company in our dealings with industry groups and regulatory authorities. 
Greg is an attorney by training with a background in insurance defense litigation.  For the past 23 years, however, he has worked directly in the casualty insurance and risk management consulting industry in a variety of underwriting, marketing, loss mitigation and general management roles.  Greg comes to Sedgwick CMS from Legion Insurance Company, which recruited him to become chief claims officer in 2007 to guide the disposition of that organization’s claims obligations during its liquidation process.   Prior to joining Legion, Greg worked at Ernst & Young in Philadelphia as a senior management consultant and practice lead for claims advisory services.  Before that he spent over 12 years with AIG in a variety of roles including thee years as vice president of the casualty loss mitigation unit. 

Greg understands both the business policy issues and the practical details of the liability claims process.  He has worked with clients, insurers, governmental entities and individual claimants. He is a graduate of the New England School of Law (J.D.) and Boston University (B.S. in business administration), and both a member of the bar and a licensed P&C adjuster in multiple states.

 
     

 

Nathan Esplin, CPA
Chief Accounting Officer, The Leavitt Group

Nathan Esplin, CPA, works for The Leavitt Group, a National “Top 15” insurance brokerage based in the western United States. The Leavitt Group consists of 85 insurance agencies located in 15 states (the western United States, Mississippi, Georgia, and Louisiana) and collectively The Leavitt Group places over $1.5 Billion in annual premiums over all lines of business.

At The Leavitt Group, Mr. Esplin works as Chief Accounting Officer and Treasurer of the parent company, Leavitt Group Enterprises, as well as Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer of several of its subsidiary companies, including PacWest Captive Insurance Company. PacWest is an Arizona domiciled agency captive owned by The Leavitt Group member agencies. PacWest is a licensed reinsurer and works with The Hartford, its fronting carrier, to reinsure workers compensation risks placed by the agencies within the Leavitt Group. PacWest began its operations back in 2001, originally domiciled in Bermuda.

Mr. Esplin is a licensed CPA with a Masters of Accountancy degree from Southern Utah University. Prior to working for The Leavitt Group, Mr. Esplin worked as an auditor for PricewaterhouseCoopers. In his free time, Mr. Esplin enjoys coaching local sports teams and serves as the local Little League President as well as serving as the President of the local hospital board.In addition Mr. Esplin enjoys serving on the National Advisory Board and Board of Trustees audit committee for Southern Utah University. Mr Esplin is married and has an incredible wife and four wonderful children (ok three great kids and one who good some days and bad other days—the life of a two year old). 

 

 
     

Charles Francis

Charles Francis
Regional Vice President, Marketing & Sales, ProAssurance Companies

Charles Francis is a P & C insurance executive with a diverse operational and technical background in multi-line insurance products, including professional and medical liability, general liability, environmental liability exposures, excess and surplus, and reinsurance. He has significant breadth of experience in leadership, strategic planning, operational management, and large integration efforts. Mr. Francis is currently Regional Vice President, Marketing & Sales, ProAssurance Companies, responsible for marketing and sales activities for the Southeast.

Prior to becoming part of the ProAssurance organization, Mr. Francis served as Vice President of Third Party Administration for PIC Wisconsin, later acquired by ProAssurance. Mr. Francis’ insurance career includes roles with Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, USF&G, Allstate Insurance Company, where he served as Environment Claim Manager, Territorial Claim Manager, and Home Office Claims Administration Manager, and with The St. Paul Companies. During his tenure with The St. Paul Companies, he served in a number of different capacities including, Chief Executive Officer for Octagon Risk Services, a wholly owned TPA operation, Vice President of Assumed Reinsurance, Assistant Vice President and Claim Officer, and Director of Claim Integration for M &A.
Mr. Francis is also an Adjunct Professor at DeVry/Keller Graduate School of Management and teaches courses in Leadership and Organizational Behavior.

Mr. Francis is a member of Professional Liability Underwriting Society (PLUS), Physician Insurers Association of America (PIAA), and serves on the Finance Committee and Speakers Bureau of DuPage PADS, a non-profit organization that serves the needs of the homeless.

Parker Harvey, CPCU

Parker Harvey has over 30 years of experience in commercial insurance with 20 years as the founder of Healthcare Professional Services, Inc, (HPSI), in Atlanta, GA. Parker has a broad range of experience in Medical Malpractice, as HPSI is the industry leader offering "Special Needs Coverage" for all healthcare providers. He was also featured in The National Underwriter article "Emerging Markets and Trends in Professional Liability" March 31st 2009. Prior to formillg HPSI, Parker was with the Hospital Corporation of America (HCA), CNA, and Physicians National Risk Retention Group (PNRRG). Parker formed HPSI to entertain "Special Needs Clients" as a market that was under served by the Independent Agency System. HPSI created programs with several carriers to underwrite risks deemed to be too risky for the admitted markets. Over the past 20 years HPSI placed more than $400,000,000.00 in premiums with a combined loss ratio less than 50%. HPSI became of 3 brokers to place more tlran $1,000,000.00 per year for 10 consecutive years with Market/Evanston Insurance Co. In 2005 HPSI formed Pro Insure, LTD, an offshore captive to retain risk for the expansion of programs with all commercial carriers. Martin joined USA Risk Group in January 2008 as part of the purchase of MIMS International (Barbados), Ltd. Charles J. (“Chaz”) Lavelle

Charles J. (Chaz) Lavelle is an attorney in the Louisville, Kentucky office of Greenebaum Doll & McDonald PLLC and was Tax Counsel for two taxpayer victories in captive insurance tax cases in the United States Court of Appeals: Humana Inc. v. Commissioner in the Sixth Circuit (litigating the “brother-sister” issue) and Ocean Drilling & Exploration Company v. United States in the Federal Circuit (litigating the outside business issue).   He regularly counsels businesses in the formation, operation and taxation of captive insurance companies.  He represents taxpayers in Federal tax controversies at all levels on a wide variety of issues, including captive insurance issues.  He regularly writes and lectures on captive insurance tax topics, including several articles in the National Underwriter and speeches at ATLAS, NYU Tax Institute and for the Vermont, South Carolina, Arizona, Western and Kentucky Captive Insurance Associations.  He has been listed in Best Lawyers in America Taxation section since 1993 and is the 2010 Best Lawyers Best Tax Lawyer in Louisville, the first year that designation has been given.  His civic and charitable activities include being a past Chairman of the Board of the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce.

Tina Truax McCuin has over 16 years of corporate trust and captive insurance experience with TD Bank Wealth Management. She is responsible for the management and new business development of captive insurance trust and investment management relationships. Her area of expertise is in delivering specialized investment management programs to our captive insurance clients.

Ms. Truax McCuin is a member of the board of directors of the International Center for Captive Insurance Education (ICCIE). She is also the chair of ICCIE’s Development Committee and a past member of the board of directors of the Vermont Captive Insurance Association (VCIA). She is a member of the VCIA’s Conference and Strategic Planning Committees. She was the first woman recipient of the VCIA’s Captive Crusader Award for recognition of member service, responsiveness, enthusiasm and unwavering support of VCIA.

Ms. Truax McCuin holds a B.S. from the University of Vermont and a M.S.A. from St. Michael’s College. Ryan head’s P-Solve’s US business and has over 14 years of financial markets experience. He works with clients to develop strategic investment and risk management strategies. Ryan joined P-Solve in 2007 from Barclays Capital in London, where he developed risk management strategies for institutional investors.

He began his finance career as an investment banker advising companies on M&A and capital-raising transactions . Ryan holds an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago Booth School Of Business and a B.A. (Honors) from the University of Texas at Austin.

David W. Michelson, President and Chief Executive Officer, National Interstate Corporation

David W. Michelson was named President and Chief Executive Officer of National Interstate Corporation effective January 1, 2008. Prior to being named Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Michelson served as the Company’s President and Chief Operating Officer during 2007. Mr. Michelson has spent nearly twenty years contributing to the success of the National Interstate companies in multiple capacities, holding several positions during his initial employment with the Company from 1992-1998 and since rejoining National Interstate in 1999, including serving as Senior Vice President and Executive Vice President. Mr. Michelson has over thirty-one years of insurance industry experience, including over fifteen years in the Company’s specialized alternative risk business. Mr. Michelson previously served the insurance industry in various positions at Reliance Insurance Company, Liberty National Fire, and Progressive Corporation. Mr. Michelson holds an Associate in Research and Planning professional designation, a B.S. from Miami University and a M.B.A. from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Robert H. (“Skip”) Myers, Jr. is the managing partner of the Washington, D.C. office of the law firm of Morris, Manning & Martin. Mr. Myers is a graduate of Princeton University and the University of Virginia Law School. His practice specializes in financial services, regulatory and corporate issues. He represents a variety of insurance entities, trade associations, and other corporations.He has written, spoken, and presented testimony on various issues, including the antitrust regulation of the financial services industry, the utilization of interstate compacts for insurance regulation, federal initiatives regarding the regulation of the business of insurance, financial services reform, privacy, the Liability Risk Retention Act, the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act, and a variety of cases related to captive insurance companies. His articles have appeared in the Journal of Insurance Regulation, Journal of Reinsurance, Risk Management, Journal of Taxation, The Brief, Best's Review, The Risk Retention Reporter, and other publications. He co-authored “Insurance Regulation in the Public Interest: Where Do We Go From Here?”, which won the best article award from the Journal of Insurance Regulation in 1994. He was nominated to, and is included in, the Guide to the World’s Leading Insurance and Reinsurance Lawyers. Mr. Myers has served as the Chair of the Public Regulation of Insurance Law Committee of the American Bar Association. As Vice President of South Carolina operations, Paul is responsible for a portfolio of clients and serves as the primary contact for South Carolina clients and the South Carolina Department of Insurance. Paul earned a degree in Economics at Clemson University and completed a concentration in Accounting at the College of Charleston. A Certified Public Accountant since 1991, he has worked extensively in both public and private accounting and is active in the South Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants. Marcia Nigro

Marcia Nigro is the National Complex Claims Consultant and is a member of the National Liability Practice Team with Sedgwick Claims Management Services. She is a resource to both our colleagues and our clients in the investigation, evaluation and resolution of the more catastrophic and complex liability claims. Additionally Marcia manages the Liability Technical Support Team for Sedgwick CMS. She also is a core team member of the Sedgwick CMS’ initiative on Medicare, Medicaid and SCHIP Extension Act - Section 111 Reporting (MMSEA) as well as a lead compliance coordinator for the Medicare Secondary Payer Act. Marcia continues to speak at client and industry organization seminars regarding the impact of this legislation on insured and self-insured claim programs.

Marcia has 35 years of experience in claims management. She joined Sedgwick CMS in 2001 as an Account Executive, overseeing the WC and Liability claim programs for several of our Fortune 500 Clients. Prior to joining Sedgwick CMS as an Account Executive, Marcia was a Claims Manager with a major carrier overseeing the international exposures for their domestic clients. Additionally, Marcia has extensive carrier experience working as a Team leader and claims supervisor. She also held the position of Liability Specialist where she managed catastrophic claims; partnering with defense counsel to develop and execute defense strategies. Marcia also was the carrier’s lead negotiator in settlement conferences, mediations and trials.

Marcia has a bachelor’s degree in history from University of Akron. She has both a CPCU and AIC designation and holds Property and Casualty Insurance licenses for the states of Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, Delaware and Texas. Currently, Marcia is working towards a Commercial Lines Coverage Specialist (CLCS) designation.

Additionally, Marcia has served on the Board of Directors of the Philadelphia Chapter of the CPCU Society. Currently she serves on the Board of Directors on behalf of Sedgwick CMS for Medicare Advocacy Recovery Coalition (MARC), Washington, DC.

Gary Osborne, President of USA Risk Group, Inc.

Gary, a Scottish Chartered Accountant, presides over the entire USA Risk Group family. He develops innovative alternative and traditional risk strategies and programs for clients and prospects of USA Risk Group. With over nineteen years of experience in the alternative market, he has been involved in the establishment of numerous single parent captives, association captives, risk retention groups, and traditional group insurance programs. He has also spoken at several national industry conferences, served on the NRRA membership committee, and was Treasurer of the Hawaii Captive Insurance Council. He currently serves on the Legislative Committee of the Vermont Captive Insurance Association and serves as a faculty member for the International Center for Captive Insurance Education.

Robert Schmid

Robert Schmid was born and raised in Bartlesville Oklahoma, received a BS Degree from Oklahoma State University and an MBA from the University of North Texas.

Prior to joining Energy Insurance Mutual Ltd., Robert served in senior management positions for a division of TRW, Oklahoma Gas and Electric and a large private equity firm in Oklahoma City.

While at OG+E he helped organize one of the larger programs in Energy Insurance Bermuda. The program provides policyholders access to Stop Loss Retiree Medical coverage that allows Members to efficiently prefund retiree medical liabilities. I am sure he will comment on this program during his presentation.

He joined EIM in May of 06 to assist in the Redomestication of EIB and to help grow Energy Insurance Services once it was relocated in the US. He is the current Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of EIS, a Director on the Board of the South Carolina Captive Insurance Association, ICCIE Graduate and holds a Senior Professional designation from the Society of Human Resources Professionals.

Robert and his wife Mary now reside in Greenville South Carolina, the new home of Energy Insurance Services.

Over the last 17 years Dennis has been engaged in various aspects of the insurance industry. He has served as an agent, an insurance company executive and in the marketing, design and analysis of alternative risk products including large deductibles, self insured retentions, captives, risk purchasing groups and risk retention groups. Dennis holds the Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter designation from the American Institute for CPCU and the Accredited Advisor in Insurance designation from the Insurance Institute of America. He earned a Masters Degree in Management from Regent University with an emphasis in alternative risk financing. Dennis has helped in the design and implementation of many successful alternative risk programs including ones in the nursing home, general construction, trucking, taxi, charter bus and roofing industries.He is a regular contributor to articles about captive insurance issues and topics as well as serving as a panelist for captive conferences and serves on the faculty for the International Center for Captive Insurance Education (ICCIE).

The firm, Advanced Insurance Solutions, Inc., is focused primarily on the heavy equipment construction business, building new products and new sources of profit, customer satisfaction and customer loyalty for equipment manufacturers, dealers, captive finance companies and industry associations.

Linda’s background includes creating new legal entities and a profitable worldwide organization as President of Caterpillar Insurance. She created the Mission, Vision and Strategy for the Insurance Operations. She grew Caterpillar Insurance Services Corporation into one of the largest independent agencies in the U.S., in the top 1%.

Prior to establishing her own firm she enjoyed the position of President of Caterpillar Insurance Holdings group of companies with record during her tenure unbroken record of Profit revenue increased over 1000%, assets grew in excess of 600%.

With her managements teams she created coverage, programs and services for construction equipment and engine manufacturing/marketing businesses worldwide.

Dr. Yi has extensive experience in risk adjustment and predictive modeling for healthcare, workers compensation, and other fields. She has worked with private insurers, providers, employers, government agencies, and researchers in the U.S. and other parts of the world. She is a frequent speaker at professional and academic conferences. Dr. Yi’s expertise includes risk adjustment for public programs and health reforms, and predictive modeling for risk management. She pioneered in the areas of workers compensation predictive modeling, risk adjustment for the uninsured population, risk-based provider profiling, risk adjustment for small group underwriting, and models supporting the Patient-Centered Medical Home. She also led the adoption of diagnosis-based risk adjustment in the recent German health reforms, and is assisting foreign government organizations in their research and strategy for their future health reforms. Before joining Milliman, Dr. Yi was a major contributor to commercial and governmental risk adjustment systems in wide use today.
